Each year, many individuals, most of them young, are hospitalized or worse due to exposure to smoke, fire and/or flame. It is everyone’s responsibility to take some very basic precautions regarding fire safety in the home.
It is important to have SMOKE DETECTORS installed in your home, regardless whether you own or rent, to allow for early detection of fire and safe escape for everyone inside (including your pets). Smoke Detectors should be tested monthly and batteries should be replaced at least once annually.
Create a FIRE ESCAPE PLAN which includes:
- 2 ways out in the event that the main exit is blocked
- A meeting place away from the home where everyone knows to meet
- A plan for getting pets out safely
In case of a fire, always remember:
- to feel the doors for heat – NEVER OPEN A HOT OR WARM DOOR
- stay low to the floor to avoid breathing in smoke
- if you’re trapped in a room, use blankets to seal doors and keep out smoke, get attention by making noise or use a light at a window
- when you GET OUT, STAY OUT AND CALL 911
- if clothing is on fire, STOP, DROP AND ROLL
- PRACTICE YOUR ESCAPE PLAN WITH THESE TIPS TWICE A YEAR – THIS WAY WHEN IF AND WHEN THE TIME COMES FOR YOU TO PUT THE PLAN INTO PLACE, EVERYONE WILL KNOW WHAT TO DO

if you smell Smoke or Natural Gas, if your Smoke Detector or CO Detector activates, GET OUT – STAY OUT – CALL 911
